What began as a modest lakeside bungalow on Lake Norman has been transformed into a modern waterfront retreat while preserving the memories and character that made the home special to its owners.

Originally built by the homeowners' parents in the 1970s, the property held significant sentimental value, making this renovation about much more than adding square footage. The goal was to create a home that could serve future generations while honoring its past.

Working within updated lake buffer and zoning regulations presented unique challenges that required creative solutions. To maximize the property's potential, KEEN expanded the home's footprint to the furthest extent permitted and designed a new second story featuring an elevated deck that also functions as a covered carport.

While the finished home feels entirely new, this project was far more than a straightforward renovation. Aside from preserving the original Lake Room roof, the structure was essentially rebuilt from the ground up. Along the way, unforeseen structural conditions required the team to adapt portions of the original design — a common reality in major renovations and one that highlights the importance of experience and flexibility throughout the construction process.

One of the most meaningful aspects of the project was the preservation of original redwood ceiling boards from the home. Rather than discarding these materials, they were thoughtfully repurposed to wrap new ceiling beams, frame the skylight, and create a custom pantry countertop, allowing pieces of the original home to remain part of its next chapter.

The renovation added 782 square feet, bringing the home to approximately 2,370 square feet. Expansive windows, elevated finishes, and carefully considered living spaces now take full advantage of the property's stunning Lake Norman views while creating a functional home designed for modern lakefront living.
